|
| A minority group (which I think might be geographically
| centered, rather than scattered geographically but
| concentrated, say, socio-economically) believes that the
| "personalities" of the letters that make up your
| name (and other words) have meaning and affect things.

This for of "divination" is called Acrophonology. Each letter has a
meaning. The meaning of a letter is affected by being the first, last, or a
medial character. Common di-/tri- graphs also have "collective" meanings, as
do double letters. From what little I recall, consonants drew in and focused
energy, while vowels manifest and release energy. (Consonants are what you
bring towards you in life, and what you have to learn. Vowels are how you
deal with things.) Consonant clusters are "clogged energy". Also, it's best
to have one consonant and one vowel at the initial and final positions. A
medial and final consonant together means the person often feels restricted
and can't bring about what s/he wants. Similarly, two vowels means the
person is "adrift", and has things come to and go through them too quickly
or often to be able to focus and do what they need to do.

I knew an acrophonoligist many years ago. I didn't care for her, but
I thought the idea was interesting. She said the practice came from Hebrew.
I know many cultures of the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean believed
each letter symbolized something, similar to the way each Germanic rune has
a meaning.

I don't practice acrophonology. I just have an interest in
divinatory techniques of different cultures and religions.

        Mike
