And I've heard a good many arguments against that usage from Blacks as
well.  The connection with slavery is just way too strong.

And about South Carolina, I don't know the details, but is it ONLY the
confederate flag that's flown?  Around here, in Florida, we also fly the
confederate flag, but we also fly the flag of every other nation that's
ever ruled Florida - Britain, France, Spain, United States, and
Confederate States, the so-called Five Flags [incidentally, altho France
and Spain's flags are officially those used when the countries actually
ruled us, I've sometimes seen their MODERN flags being flown].
