It's a useful way of doing it. The first several hundred words of Kash were
derived from similar lists; and I had to make up a similar one (about 1200
items) for research in Indonesia (unaware at the time that there was such a
list already in existence, though no longer in print or available, dating
from the late 19th Cent.-- the Holle Blanco Lists, which were sent to
teachers, administrators/military, missionaries etc. all around the islands.
Respondents were supposed to follow a fixed system of transcription, but
many amateurs did not, with the result that some lists require a lot of
"creative interpretation"......never mind the difficulties of reading 19th
C. handwriting and resulting printers' errors)
