The name is very suggestive. Do you have Venetic in the background?? If
I'm not mistaken, its origins are rather obscure. I'm not sure what's
available on it nowadays, but do remember seeing a brief monograph from the
40s or 50s published by U.Cal. IIRC
Sad to say, I know next to nothing about Slavic linguistics (beyond what
little I've picked up from lurking on Cybalist), but your Master Plan looks
viable IMO. I believe I've read somewhere that there seem to be Slavic-like
features in Venetic, though that's speculative.
