It's not a dumb question at all, in my opinion. My family doesn't do much to celebrate New Year. (Honestly, my husband went to work on both Christmas day and New Year's day so that he can take extra time off at Julian Christmas. He has a great time working those two days, because there's practiacally no one else there to interrupt him and keep him from getting work done.) Insofar as we observe New Year, we observe Gregorian New Year, because we use the Julian calendar only for liturgical time, and the Eastern Orthodox Church New Year is September 1st., so there is nothing particularly special about Julian January 1st.
