It's not a dumb question at all, in my opinion. My family doesn't do much
to celebrate New Year. (Honestly, my husband went to work on both
Christmas day and New Year's day so that he can take extra time off at
Julian Christmas. He has a great time working those two days, because
there's practiacally no one else there to interrupt him and keep him from
getting work done.)
Insofar as we observe New Year, we observe Gregorian New Year, because we
use the Julian calendar only for liturgical time, and the Eastern Orthodox
Church New Year is September 1st., so there is nothing particularly special
about Julian January 1st.
