Sorry! Merci Christophe.Yes, that's the one I meant (the upside-down
lowercase h). I was working from memory of how the phoneme was written, and
was taking light relief from an assignment on number/group theory which has
to be in next week. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

No, the phoneme for 'u' in French 'ui' here is the "inverted lowercase h",
[H] in X-SAMPA. It is to [y] what [j] is to [i]. But a few people already
made that clear :)) . The "inverted lowercase m" is a high unrounded back
vowel (the unrounded version of [u]). French doesn't have this sound
