You could say that nouns have gender in English, too, it's just covert
instead of overt gender. It's encoded on the mandatory pronouns you need
to use to refer back to each noun:
"I dropped the table. It broke."
*"I dropped the table. He broke."
"The woman ate her own coconuts."
*"The woman ate his own coconuts."
"The boy jumped. Then he tripped."
*"The boy jumped. Then it tripped."
