No..I believe this is the case of what happened in 'Tin Man':
Normally, Betazoid telepathic abilities dont surface until adolenscence.
It's probable that they slowly surface within a few years, so undoubtedly
these newly telepathic adolescents are trained on how to shut off their
telepathic abilities, and thus use them at will so that they dont _always_
hear peoples thoughts. This is supported with a novel called 'Guises Of The
Mind' (a TNG novel) in which a woman who has telepathic abilities (or
something similar) learns, by help of Deanna Troi, how to block outside
telepathy, thus learning to use her abilities only when she wanted to.
To continue, apparently some Betazoids are born with their telepathic
abilities already developed and active. And they eventually are practically
driven insane and lead solitude lives, because they never were able to learn
to control their abilities, so they remain active constantly. It would be
like one of us entering a supermarket and hearing each and every little
though that passed through everyone's minds, because we never learned to
control our abilities.
So, Tam Elbrun (the character I've been speaking of) acts very uncomfortably
because of his 'disability'.

Agreed; why wouldn't they? Or perhaps; how do you mean? Is there a reason
why there shouldn't be a single word?
Hope this helps..
