Here's a system I've devised: Children get *both* parent's surname in
the first generation, with the parent of the same sex first. Thus, the
daughter would be Jones-Smith, the son Smith-Jones. Now, after the
first generation, the daughter would pass on the Jones part to her
children, and the son the Smith part to his sons. Thus:
Smith(M)----- Jones(F) Brown(M)---------Davis(F)

| |
| |
---------------- |
| | |
Smith-Jones(M) Jones-Smith(F)------Brown-Davis(M)
|
|
|
----------------
| |
| |
| |
Jones-Brown(F) Brown-Jones(M)
Essentially, then, names would be passed along paternal lines and among
maternal lines. Similar to cultures with maternal and paternal clans.
Not sure if there'd be any change when married. Perhaps a full formal
name might have the spouses surname tagged on? Thus, Mrs.
Jones-Smith-Brown-Davis and Mr. Brown-Davis-Jones-Smith. If I can come
up with a good conhistorical justification, perhaps I'll give this
custom to the Terra-Novans.
