I'm not certain how serious I ought to take complaints about outrageous
orthography from a native anglophone ...
At least <stj> is reliably [x] (unless there's a morpheme break in it). Now,
the umpteen different ways of writing initial [x-] and [j-] is no doubt one of
the weaker points of Swedish spelling. But most of the ambiguity is in the
pronunciation->spelling direction rather than the reverse.
This not to deny that there's no way to tell that _general_ and _generell_
("general" as noun and adjective, respectively) have respectively [j-] and [x-
], and _gecko_ has [g-].

thread, I think. I'm still debating whether /s/ should >[S] before [j i e].
