I'm not certain how serious I ought to take complaints about outrageous orthography from a native anglophone ... At least <stj> is reliably [x] (unless there's a morpheme break in it). Now, the umpteen different ways of writing initial [x-] and [j-] is no doubt one of the weaker points of Swedish spelling. But most of the ambiguity is in the pronunciation->spelling direction rather than the reverse. This not to deny that there's no way to tell that _general_ and _generell_ ("general" as noun and adjective, respectively) have respectively [j-] and [x- ], and _gecko_ has [g-].

We'll see. I'll have something more to say on Meghean before I start a new thread, I think. I'm still debating whether /s/ should >[S] before [j i e]. Andreas
