German 'Säugling' is from vt. 'säugen', 'to breast-feed', + '-ling'. (BTW, vt. 'säugen' is the (lexicalised) causative of vi. 'saugen', 'to suck'). According to my dictionary, English also has 'suckling'. **Henrik
