The answer is hardware-dependent, unfortunately, since "standby"
is not a standard notion. Google for "laptop mode" and "Linux kernel".

Sun's license for Java doesn't allow it to be redistributed
commercially, so distros can't carry it (except Debian, which
won't because it's un-Free). Everything you need to know about
this subject and Fedora Core is well documented at
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Fedora-Multimedia-Installation-HOWTO/ .
Be sure to change the 1s into 2s in the examples, which are
tuned for FC1.
Alternatively, you can just go to java.sun.com and follow the
menus till you get to a download page.
