Poorly. SGML had a feature for this, but it was never widely implemented
and is generally agreed to have been badly specified. LMNL is a
markup language based on the notion of overlapping ranges rather than
structural elements, but it is not yet well known. The main site at
lmnl.org has been down for a while, but should be up Real Soon Now.
