FWIW, in my home dialect (Warwickshire, England) the "short" a found in
"back" and also in "class", "grass", "bastard" etc. is more low front
unrounded. The "long" a, generally written "ar" is low central to my ear.
BTW, ar /a:/ is Midlands for "yes".
