Wait, lemme correct myself. The only thing worse than a trombone
playing sharp is a clarinet playing flat.

I went to a parochial school (Episcopalian, or "Catholic Light"). The
teachers used a phonics course called Spalding Spelling. It focused on
spelling as well as pronunciation. Letters were written with numbers
over them to indicate which sound, and sequences were underlined then
numbered thusly. The most extreme example was "ough", which altogether
was numbered between 1 and 6. (Yes, Virginia, there are six sounds for
"ough".
And that can be tough.
