In most dialects, there is a restriction on the number of morae per syllable to 2 per syllable. Different dialects handle this in different ways. Some, like the standard, unround the vowel and turn it into the nearest glide (the protoform is from C'|ali *_möu_ and *_töu_ respectively). Other dialects monopthongize it to get the following: 3 meo mul 4 teo tul Still others obliterate a distinction entirely, to get: 3 myu myul 4 tyu tyul ===================================================================== Thomas Wier <trwier@...> <http://home.uchicago.edu/~trwier> "...koruphàs hetéras hetére:isi prosápto:n / Dept. of Linguistics mú:tho:n mè: teléein atrapòn mían..."
