Which field?
The feeling I get from Peter and Vaksje is that the Natlang field is
intended for Natlangs you're comfortable with (if not fluent, at least
capable of reading and writing in easily), presumably so that searching the
natlang field for "finnish" will turn up people to help you with questions
about finnish. Hmm.
Many are using the free-text fields to provide additional information like:
I've dabbled in gaelic, studied latin for 1.5 years (3 semesters), and
studied spanish in high school. Etc.
(None of those could I actually read without a lot of work with books in
hand).
I guess we've assumed that if your e-mail is visible, and you have a
profile, that you don't mind being contacted by an individual? I'm not sure
that's a good assumption. :)
