I wasn't thinking of making any part of it mandatory.   However, I'm
inclined to include all three fields (probably setup like the current
birthday entry, with pull-downs).   If you can't remember the day, just
leave it on the 1st of the month, or pick something arbitrarily in the
middle, etc.   Likewise with the month. :)

Hmm. 2001 July 2 was when I joined.  Interesting.
