Babel in the east or not?

Lately I've been working on translating the Babel-text to
tAruven, and have discovered something that I, as an
atheist, finds quite amusing...

In most english versions of the Babel-text, the humans/men
travel _away_ from the east (westbound?) to find the plain
in the land of Shinar... like in the King James-version:

"2 And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, [..]"

While in other tongues, it is -towards- the east, eastbound
travelling... like in this swedish bible from 1917:

"2 Men n=E4r de br=F6to upp och drogo =F6sterut, [..]"

Which is right? Going towards the east or going away from
the east?
