A pair analogous to "drawer/draw-er" is that of "prayer/pray-er." I
distinguish them by making the first of each pair one syllable and the
second two. Although the vowel seems to remain the same in the first
pair, it is not the same in the second pair. The vowel in the first
(I couldn't find the CXS symbol) is the same as in "care." In the
second it rhymes with "stay."
BTW, both "drawer" and "draw-er" have the same etymology. Perhaps the
latter comes from the meaning of "to pull the brush, pen, etc."
