Of course, at the time that "México" was spelled with x the x still represented /S/, hence the use of X in names like "Xochitl" (usually reduced to "Xochi" /'sotSi/ ) where most Mexicans pronounce it in that position as /s/ rather than /x/. I still can't make myself pronounce /x/ for j and x, using /h/ instead (and i have heard it pronounced very softly almost like /h/ anyway).
