The trouble is that Italy *was* conquered by Germanic-speakers, twice;
first by the Ostrogoths, then by the Lombards. Not much happened to
Italian as a result.
My guess is that because the conquerors were barbarians relative to
the Italians, they got as Italianized as possible as fast as possible.
