I read somewhere that SOV and VSO (and VOS and OSV) langs often develop
cases to distinguish the subject and object morphologically. (at least, I
think it was those).

You could for instance do a wordorder shift, and if you want back to SVO,
there's nothing that prevents you from having your language shift back...
