- I am proud to say that i had already been named Estéban at least 2 years before ever taking Spanish. :-) My Spanish-crazed older cousin "Miguelita" (Michelle) started calling me and my brother "Estéban" and "Alejandro" (Alan) and her little brother the same age as us Jeffrey "Javier" early on. Of course, whenever i call my brother "Álej" for short he tries to kill me. Also, anyone who has learnt the spanish rules of where you put accents will notice that the smitchik in "Estéban" is *not necessary*. But that's the way my first Spanish teacher wrote it on the board the first day of class, so that's how i write it. It makes it look cooler. :-) . My cousin went through many Spanish names during his 4 years of taking Spanish with me (we were in the same class in highschool). So sometimes we called him by all of them together: Jorge Javier Juan-Carlos! And then there was the girl in Spanish III, who when she first started taking Spanish never settled on a name, so the teacher just referred to her as "Blanca" ("blank") until the name stuck. I remember once i went to www.zhongwen.com and tried to come up with a Chinese name for myself, but i never really figured it out, and kept on referring to myself as long/huo\/ (i can never remember the correct tone numbers... long1huo3?), "Dragonfire" (my old BBS handle and the source for my hebraicized email address). i used to draw the characters for "wo(3?) shi(4?) longhuo" in my notebook when i was bored in highschool. And then i used to try and make up sentences with all the different "ma" words from my friend's Berlitz book. -Stephen (Steg) "i swear, your mother's a hemp horse?!"
