We learned that. And |a| as [@].
So the /e/ reduction means that in normal speech, the unaccented word не is
pronounced [Ji] rather than [Je]?

Well, that's still truer for Russian than for English.
No wonder. Any East Slavic langauge blows one's mind up! Only Georgian can

Haven't even looked at Georgian - I suppose I should, since I live there.
;) I am dusting off what's left of my Russian, though, just so it can cause
maximal interference as I try to learn some Ukrainian . . .
