Not to mention that even if you have a perfect ruler (or rather, as
close to perfect as possible), there's no guarantee that their successor
will be any good, and you'd be stuck with a cruel dictator.
But, the biggest problem with democracy is that it tends to make
government short-sighted. If a leader has to worry about being
re-elected, they'll be wary of unpopular actions, no matter how
necessary they may be. Of course, the opposite, an unelected leader,
has the problem that there's no way to remove a bad leader, and little
to restrain their actions, good or bad. Churchill was definitely right
in that, I think. "Democracy is the worst form of government, except
for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time", or
something to that effect. (Does anyone know the exact quote?)
