Oh - when I saw this on the 19th Jan..... {quote} I had to post something when I saw the following sentences: The Columbia Guide to Standard American English: "_Ago_ is both adjective, as in _The murder took place many years ago,_ and adverb, as in _The murder took place long ago._ It is Standard in both uses." {quote} I assumed Harold was a 'lurker' who had seen this during the thread on 'ago' which began a few days before - especially as it was one of the two authorities quoted by Charlie. I now see that Harold may well have seen this quote independently and, joining the list on the 19th, have posted his mail without realizing that we had already been discussing the very same thing and, indeed, the very same quote from "The Columbia Guide to Standard American English". If this is so, then I sincerely apologize to Harold for my earlier mail. But I hope Harold realizes the other mails followed his - clearly I was not the only one that assumed it was all part of the on-going thread about 'ago. taliesin generally gives good advice. Heed that, Harold, and you will do well. Welcome - and we must both learn not to jump to conclusions :) -- Ray ================================== ray@carolandray.plus.com http://www.carolandray.plus.com ================================== MAKE POVERTY HISTORY
