As I already explained, the use of "tu" for God instead of "vous" more or less
coincides with a change in the view French people have of God himself, from a
terrible unforgiving punishing figure (like French Catholics were used to
learning about) to a fatherly all-love all-forgiveness figure. "God is your
best friend" is the current motto. And you're not going to say "vous" to your
best friend.
