There's a page with a lot of books and small descriptions at:
http://www.valdyas.org/conlang/references/html. If you're an
absolute beginner, I'd say, start with Describing Language
by David Graddol, Jenni Cheshire and Joan Swann, Open University
Press. Not as expensive as full-blown scholarly texts, either.
