Interesting. Still, I wonder if it was an arbitrary choice, or if there was a reason? Perhaps that was the most common occurrence? Also, what about the voicing diacritic? Based on my (admittedly scanty) knowledge of Japanese, it appears that voicing was perhaps once allophonic?
