Hi all,
I just wanted to write to the list to announce that two days ago,
Doug Ball filed for his Ph.D. in linguistics at Stanford. His
dissertation is "Clause Structure and Argument Realization in
Tongan", and is refreshingly non-Chomskyan. ;) Doug's been
a member of the list at least since I've been here (around 2000),
and is the creator of Skerre:

In 2000, with the help of his professor Sarah Higley (a.k.a. Sally
Caves, creator of Teonaht) up at Rochester, he participated in
the 2000 University Research and Creativity Conference by
giving a talk on Skerre summarized here:

And, most recently, he gave a talk entitled "Conlanging and the
Linear Aspects of Syntax" at the First Language Creation Conference,
which you can watch here:

Doug is not the type of guy to toot his own horn, so I thought
I'd do it for him, since I know he has friends here. So,
congratulations,
Doug, and good luck in the untamed wilderness of Academia!
-David
