Thank you, John and Christophe! Your explanations about trigger systems
are very clear and illuminating. Yes, I think the books on Tagalog
I've read were written before the term became widely used. Among
Russian linguists, at any rate.
John, you also mentioned that Tagalog is 'syntactically ergative'; since
I'm trying to refresh and rethink what I know about this language
(thank you for the link, Christophe!), would you add a short comment?
In particular, what is the alternative to 'syntactically ergative', for
a trigger language?
