Affixing doesn't specifically mean a word element added to give meaning.
Affixing means simply attaching something. This is what I mean, you'd attach
something to the meaning symbol to give it further meaning. This affix could
go in any direction, which doesn't mean it's going to be linear. Hell, you
could even surround a symbol with its affix in a sort of bubble.
