Affixing doesn't specifically mean a word element added to give meaning. Affixing means simply attaching something. This is what I mean, you'd attach something to the meaning symbol to give it further meaning. This affix could go in any direction, which doesn't mean it's going to be linear. Hell, you could even surround a symbol with its affix in a sort of bubble. -- Remember Kids, only you can prevent misdirected replies! Pay attention to the "send to" line!
