As regards Eastern Orthodox New Year, the Orthodox church in Riverside my
wife belongs to (which is nominally Antiochian but quite eclectic, as it is the
only Orthodox church in town and hence has Greeks. Romanians, Ukrainians (like
my wife) , etc.)
had a long service on New Year's Eve evening which was jointly celebrating
the feast of the Circumcision of Christ (which should be 8 days after his
birth) and the Feast of Saint Basil. Aside from some special hymns in the liturgy
referring to the two feasts, the main celebration after the liturgy was cutting
and sharing the "St.Basil's Bread" --one piece has money in it, and the
person receiving that piece is supposed to have the benefit of the prayers of St.
Basil for the coming year.
