I'm not German, but I didn't notice the difference before it was pointed out to
me.

Then again, my Swedish /v/ is probably closer to [v\]. Telling fricatives and
approximants apart is something I've always had trouble with*, but my /v/ is
definitely less frictiony than my /f/.


Tangentially, learning German has left me pronouncing German names with
faux-German phonetics when speaking Swedish, so I now say, frex, [bax] "Bach",
and [SA:nhOrst] "Scharnhorst" - I used to say [baS] and [xA:n`hOs`t`]. The
later, in particular, ought be rather hard on the ears of real Germans.
