Actually, in the RPG that my brother and i made in
middleschool/highschool, we made a list of the specific gender terms for
different races, along the lines of "male humans are called men, and
female humans are called women."
Male halflings were called "hobbits", and female halflings were called
"hobbettes". really!
And then of course there's one of the guys who i play RPGs with now in
college, in whose homemade system the halfling-like species are known as
Bastards.
