The Russians started doing Linguistics Olympiads in (I believe) the
60s. 1965 is the date that springs to mind. It's been said that if
there's a famous Russian linguist of a certain age, you can go back to
the LO archives and figure out which year they won as a teenager!
I'm pretty heavily involved in the U.S. competition, if any
high-schoolers here want any details, practice problems from old LOs,
etc. And top scorers represent the U.S. in the International
Linguistics Olympiad!
