The Russians started doing Linguistics Olympiads in (I believe) the 60s. 1965 is the date that springs to mind. It's been said that if there's a famous Russian linguist of a certain age, you can go back to the LO archives and figure out which year they won as a teenager! I'm pretty heavily involved in the U.S. competition, if any high-schoolers here want any details, practice problems from old LOs, etc. And top scorers represent the U.S. in the International Linguistics Olympiad!
