I've always been fascinated by machines and languages. Before I was even old enough to go to school was taking both of them apart and putting the pieces back together in some different way just to see what would happen. As an engineer some of the ways I have of understanding a machine are, watching is it action, taking it apart, and building small working models. I do the same with language, which I approach from an engineering perspective. I watch them in action, I take them apart, and I build small working models. The ultimate goal from my persepctive is to teach a machine to use language. I can't really claim to understand language until I can do that. --gary
