I normally hear it in the "X is nigh" construction (Death is nigh.).
Back in my days at summer camp, there was a song set to the tune of
"Taps" (maybe 'Taps' actually had these words?) and I don't remember
all the words, but the last three lines were along the lines of:
...Day is done, (dooooooooooooooone)
Safely rest,
God is nigh... (niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh)
