Yes, it has taken a good deal of time to copy that all. But
then, I haven't worked on this for about a year. Sally Caves
and CYS Zhang have copies of the old file which lacked the
half of the book and wasn't checked on typos either, so
ATTN Sally and Hanuman!
The next copied work to be expected of me is "Old High
German Primer" by J. Wright (copyright 1906! You might find
it as well on Gutenberg already, I haven't checked yet) ...
I found the thing useful, but unfortunately I could only
find one copy as pictures [1] with half of one page missing
and one copy in HTML with all but acute and grave missing
IIRC. I know that Old High German is not a language in the
sense of what we call Modern High German today, but Wright
not only explains the sound shifts from Germanic to German
but he also gives general hints about grammar that were
gathered from various religious texts of that time which
were written in Franconian dialects. However, since Wright
frequently quotes polytonic Greek, I wasn't satisfied with
the HTML page either. I hope it has got the other half of
the page ... Since I wasn't satisfied with both sources,
I started writing off the pictures and make a PDF book of
it for myself. I'm only afraid of inaccuracies because in
the case of such a book that gives etymologies and all it
does more matter than in a simple English word list ...
For the OHG Primer I'll take at least half another year,
because I don't feel like doing *heavy* copying at the
moment. And there are maaaaaaaaaany huge tables with
declensions in there to format. On the page I've linked
under this mail, there is some more century old stuff
about old Germanic languages, e.g. a Middle High German
primer, some stuff about Gothic and one book about Old
English I think, too. All scanned. You see, there's more
people like me with too much time at their hands ... What
a pity there wasn't IPA a century ago, at least Wright
didn't care much to use it if there already was. Enough
rant.
Cheers,
Carsten
