Not negative - I'd say
Z is a little adj
This would give us:
X is adjest
X is adjer than Z
X is very adj
X is adj
Z is a little adj
Z is less adj than X
Z is the least adj
I'm tempted to use the proposed terms "augmentative" and "diminutive"
for the "very" and "a little" forms, respectively.
