Rather an "Elf-Latin" (which is also what Tolkien called it): an old,
venerable scholarly tongue that is no-one's vernacular any longer,
but still used for certain purposes. The "lingua franca" of the Elves
at the end of the Third Age is definitely Sindarin. I haven't seen
the movie yet, but I'm sure that what you hear in it is, for the most
part at least, Sindarin.
