I think that's extremely unlikely. At least, unlikely enough to make me
want to look for more plausible possibilities.

My first choice would be some kind of weird contact evolution, assuming my
baby-talk-with-outsiders theory doesn't pan out (which is the one I'd
*like* to be true...). But I wouldn't rule out the idea of a genetic
defect, as John suggested.
