What happened is that Doug's mail user agent didn't label his outbound
reply as UTF-8 - it was either explicitly marked as Latin-1 or else
unmarked; Latin-1 is still the default. G with caron in UTF-8 is
encoded as two bytes which, when interpreted as two individual Latin-1
characters, get the interesting sequence you saw.
Ray's reply to Doug showed up as a brand new thread, so I don't have
Doug's original email to examine, but the above is clearly what
transpired.
