Lateral/Central vs Apical/Laminal/Dorsal

(Biweekly Phonetic Question #2.)
Okay, this has been bugging me for a long time: how does the lateral/central
distinction relate to the apical/laminal/dorsal distinction? Are they
independant, or are laterals included in one of the 3 latter categories (or
perhaps a 4th category on their own)??
