And for some rhotics, such as myself, *cawn would be indistinguishable from "con"... Hm. Is there a difference in any lects you know of between the pronunciations of "con" (confidence game) and "conn" (direct a vessel at sea)? -- Mark J. Reed <markjreed@...>
