As an acronym, HUD = Heads-Up Display. In the real world, a
dashboard/cockpit/control panel display that is projected in front of the
operator (e.g. a translucent overlay on the windshield) so that they don't
have to look down to see it. Nowadays also used for the interface portion
of a virtual reality display (as opposed to the portion that shows the
virtual world).
