This is true, and I know that. I actually have been subscribed
to two yahoogroups that way for a while. But what you get is a
second-class membership - you can take part in the mail conversation,
but have no access to the Files section etc.; and in the two groups
I was on people treated me as a poor bugger who was just too lazy
to obtain a Yahoo! ID and become a full-fledged group member
when I asked them to send me files posted to the Files section.
So far, my experience with Yahoo! has always been negative. It seems
as if the first time they do something that doesn't suck will be
when they start making vacuum cleaners. That they deface the posts
in the archives with adverts is not nice, but actually rather
harmless. More problematic is that they apparently sell e-mail
addresses of group members to spammers. At least, it looks like that
to me. My mailbox used to be clean, but shortly after I subscribed
to the yahoogroups mentioned above, I started receiving spam,
fortunately only a trickle rarely exceeding three messages per day.
I suspect that those spammers got my address from Yahoo!, given the
close correlation between my yahoogroup subscription and the point
of time the spammers "discovered" my address.
These problems are the reason why I was opposed to setting up a
yahoogroup for the LLL from the start. But discussing LLL matters
in CONLANG is not the best solution, either. I'll ask the Rempts,
who already host the Relay mailing list, whether they can set up
a mailing list for us.
Greetings,
Jörg.
