Silly Australian...
The diphthong is [e@] (or [E@]), and it's the most wonderful vowel in the
world!!!!! Why else would New Yorkers use it for pretty much [he@f] the
occurances of /&/ in the language? When we [pe@s ge@s], or are [gle@d],
or put our groceries (for instance [le@m] or [e@l]) in [be@gz]...
