Perhaps a whole chart would help. English contains a number of diphthongs
as standard vowels, so it's not always obvious to a native speaker what they
are composed of. This chart is how I pronounce these words, so your mileage
may vary. In each word, the vowel illustrated is surrounded by
ap'o'strophes if there is more than one vowel.
/i/ greet
/I/ bid
/}/ root
/u/ lute
/U/ book
/ei/ crate, often reducing to /e/ gr'ea'test
/8/ road
/ou/ phone
/@/ run
/E/ bed
/O/ saw
/{/ bad
/{u/ cloud
/{U_G/ cow
/a/ f'a'ther
/A/ pond
/r\/ bitt'er'
/L\/ litt'le'
/n/ mitt'en'
I'm sure you'll have some differences in your own speech, though I'm really
not sure where, as I'm no expert on the dialects and regional pronunciations
of English. But this is my best guess at how I say things. What I do know
is that it's definitely not Californish.
